Reliance – Aquasystem 18 Litre Potable Expansion Vessel with Hose 3/4″ M x F & 3/4″ Service Valve ...Reliance – Aquasystem 18 Litre Potable Expansion Vessel with Hose 3/4″ M x F & 3/4″ Service Valve XVES050050. This white 18L vessel has a pre-set pressure of 3 bar and a maximum pressure of 10 bar. It measures 430mm in height and 280mm in diameter, with a 3/4″ MBSP connection. All Aquasystem expansion vessels are supplied with a replaceable membrane, which separates the water and air, to prevent contamination of the water system, corrosion of the expansion vessel or pressure loss in the water system. The main purpose of an expansion vessel is to compensate for the increase in volume of water due to the varying water temperatures in hot water or heating systems. When water is heated it expands and as water is not compressible this increased volume will create a rise in pressure within the system. As an example, water being heated from 0°C-100°C will increase by approx 4.5%. The expansion vessel allows for this extra space, as when water temperature increases the membrane inside the vessel inflates to allow the water to fill the vessel. The membrane will continue to expand until the system reaches its maximum temperature. Once this has been reached the membrane will be fully inflated and takes up the capacity of the vessel shell. Gradually the temperature will drop, which will in turn decrease the volume of water. Due to the pressure from the pressurised air surrounding the membrane, water will start to exit the vessel until the membrane is deflated.

Product Information
Full details
This Reliance Aquasystem 18-litre potable expansion vessel is designed for homeowners and plumbers managing hot water or heating systems. Its key benefit is preventing system over-pressurization caused by water expansion when heated, protecting your plumbing. A potential caveat is the need for correct pre-set pressure matching your system requirements. This vessel features a replaceable membrane to prevent water contamination and system corrosion, and it comes with a 3/4" MBSP connection and a service valve.

FAQs
What is the primary function of this expansion vessel?
Its primary function is to absorb the increased volume of water that occurs when a heating or hot water system is heated, preventing dangerous over-pressurization and protecting system components.
How do I know if the 3 bar pre-set pressure is correct for my system?
Generally, the pre-set pressure should be equal to or slightly lower than the system's static fill pressure. It is best to consult your system's installation manual or a qualified plumber to confirm the correct pressure for your specific setup.
Can this vessel be used in a central heating system?
Yes, this potable expansion vessel is suitable for domestic hot water and heating systems. Ensure it is installed on the cold water supply side or as per your system's specific requirements.
What does a replaceable membrane do?
The replaceable membrane separates the system water from the air cushion within the vessel. This prevents the air from being absorbed into the water, maintains the air charge, and stops corrosion of the vessel and system components.
How often should the expansion vessel be checked?
It is recommended to have the expansion vessel checked annually by a qualified installer to ensure it is functioning correctly and maintaining the appropriate pressure.
What are the dimensions of the 18-litre vessel?
The vessel measures 430mm in height and 280mm in diameter.
Can I adjust the pre-set pressure myself?
While minor adjustments might be possible for some vessels, it is strongly recommended that any pressure adjustment or system-specific tuning be performed by a qualified plumber or heating engineer to avoid damaging the vessel or the system.
Troubleshooting
System pressure is too high or fluctuating erratically.
Check if the expansion vessel is correctly sized for the system. Verify the pre-set pressure is appropriate and adjust if necessary. Ensure the membrane is intact and not failing.
Water hammer or banging noises in the system.
This can indicate inadequate pressure management. Ensure the expansion vessel is properly charged with air and functioning correctly. Check for other potential causes of water hammer.
Vessel feels heavy or waterlogged.
This suggests the air charge has been lost or the membrane has failed, allowing water into the air side. The vessel may need servicing or replacement by a professional.
Leaking from the connection point.
Ensure the 3/4" MBSP connection is properly sealed using appropriate thread sealant or tape. Check that fittings are not damaged and are securely tightened.
Pros and Cons
Pros
Effectively manages thermal expansion in water systems, preventing pressure surges.
Replaceable membrane ensures water quality and protects the vessel from corrosion.
Pre-set pressure simplifies initial setup for common applications.
Robust build quality with a high maximum pressure rating.
Includes essential components like a service valve for easier installation and maintenance.
Cons
Requires correct pre-set pressure to match system requirements; incorrect settings can lead to inefficiency.
Installation may require professional plumbing knowledge.
The 18-litre capacity might be insufficient for very large or high-demand systems.
Requires periodic checks to ensure optimal performance.
Primarily designed for potable water systems; check compatibility for other fluid types.
Setup, Compatibility & Care
Setup:
Ensure the system is depressurized before installation.
Install the expansion vessel vertically on the cold water supply side, close to the water heater or boiler, using the 3/4" MBSP connection.
Connect the included service valve for ease of maintenance.
Verify the pre-set pressure (3 bar) is suitable for your system. Adjustments may be necessary by a qualified professional if your system's static pressure differs significantly.
Tighten all connections securely but avoid over-tightening.
Compatibility:
Designed for potable (drinking) water systems.
Suitable for hot water and heating systems with a maximum operating pressure of 10 bar.
Check if the 3 bar pre-set pressure aligns with your system's requirements. For systems operating consistently above or below this, professional adjustment or a vessel with a different pre-set pressure may be needed.
Care:
Periodically check the vessel's pressure (annually recommended) by a qualified installer.
Inspect for any signs of leaks or damage.
The replaceable membrane can be serviced or replaced by a qualified plumber if performance degrades.
