Product Information

Full details

The Magura MT5e Disc Brake is designed for e-bike and s-pedelec riders who require motorbike-inspired stopping power for heavier, faster electric cycles. This 4-piston hydraulic system integrates a HIGO-Opener switch to automate brake light activation and drive cut-out, significantly enhancing rider safety during high-speed transit. While its robust, long 2,200mm hose provides ample reach for various frame geometries, the system is specifically optimized for e-systems and may be overkill for lightweight manual bicycles.

Extended Product Information

FAQs

Can I use this brake on a standard mountain bike?

While it will mount physically, the integrated HIGO switch will not serve a purpose, and the weight is optimized for e-bikes.

What brake fluid should I use?

Use only Magura Royal Blood mineral oil. Never use DOT fluids.

Is the lever blade adjustable?

The MT5e features tool-free reach adjustment to customize the distance between the lever and the handlebar.

How long is the hydraulic hose?

The hose is 2,200mm long, which can be shortened to fit your specific bike frame.

What is Carbotecture?

Carbotecture is a proprietary carbon-fiber reinforced material used by Magura for brake housing that is significantly lighter than alloy while maintaining high strength.

Will this work with any motor system?

The HIGO-Opener is a standard connector, but you should verify your motor controller's pinout compatibility before installation.

Troubleshooting

Motor does not cut out when braking

Check the HIGO connector for a secure fit and verify that the cable is not pinched or damaged along the frame.

Brake feels 'mushy' or has excessive lever travel

The system likely contains air bubbles; perform a full hydraulic bleed using Magura Royal Blood.

Reduced braking power during wet conditions

Ensure the brake rotors are free of oil or debris; clean with disc brake cleaner and consider replacing the pads if they have become glazed.

Pros and Cons

Pros

Industry-leading 4-piston stopping power for heavy e-bikes
Integrated motor cut-out and brake light switch for safety
Lightweight yet rigid Carbotecture construction
Long hose length accommodates custom and large-frame builds
Excellent modulation and lever ergonomics

Cons

May require professional installation for e-bike electronics
Heavier than standard mountain bike brake sets
Specific to e-bikes; lacks utility on standard acoustic bicycles

Setup, Compatibility & Care

Installing the MT5e requires basic hydraulic brake knowledge and an understanding of your e-bike’s wiring system.

Integration: Ensure your e-bike motor controller supports the HIGO-Opener switch input.
Routing: Utilize the 2,200mm hose to follow your frame's internal or external routing. Cut only if necessary using a high-quality hose cutter.
Bleeding: Use Magura Royal Blood mineral oil exclusively. Never use DOT fluid, as it will damage the internal seals.
Care: Clean the calipers with isopropyl alcohol periodically. Check the pads every 500-1,000 miles, as heavy e-bikes consume pad material faster than standard bikes due to the increased mass.
