Enhance your water garden with Equisetum hyemale, commonly known as rough horsetail. This striking, reed-like perennial produces tall, rigid, jointed stems with a dark green colour and black bands, offering a dramatic vertical accent perfect for pond edges and damp borders. Thriving in full sun to partial shade, Equisetum hyemale prefers consistently moist or waterlogged soil and shallow water. It grows well in aquatic baskets, bog gardens, and naturalistic wetland plantings. Fully hardy in the UK, it maintains year-round interest with minimal care. Known for its architectural form, this plant adds texture and structure to water features while providing valuable habitat for amphibians and aquatic insects. It also helps stabilise soil and reduce erosion on pond banks. A bold, easy-to-grow choice for both contemporary and wildlife-friendly gardens, Equisetum hyemale is an excellent addition for gardeners seeking low-maintenance plants with strong visual impact.
