Product Information

Full details

Seachem Flourite is a premium, fracted, and porous clay gravel designed specifically for enthusiasts maintaining natural planted freshwater aquariums. It serves as an excellent foundation for healthy root development, providing long-term structural stability without requiring replacement or chemical additives. While it offers superior biological and physical benefits for live plants, users should note that it requires a thorough initial rinse and careful water filling to prevent clouding the aquarium during the setup process.

FAQs

Do I need to mix Flourite with other fertilizers?

Flourite provides a great physical substrate but does not contain added nutrients. You may need to use root tabs or water column fertilizers depending on your plant species.

Does this substrate expire?

No, Seachem Flourite is a permanent substrate and does not need to be replaced.

Is Flourite safe for bottom-dwelling fish?

Yes, it is safe, though it has a rougher texture than fine sand. Ensure your fish are not sensitive to coarse gravel before introducing them.

Will this increase my water hardness?

No, Flourite is chemically inert and will not contribute to water hardness or pH fluctuations.

Can I use this with an under-gravel filter?

It is generally not recommended for under-gravel filters as the particle size is fine enough to potentially clog the system or restrict flow.

Troubleshooting

Water is extremely cloudy after filling

This is typically due to residual dust. Allow the filter to run with fine filter floss, which will trap the particles; the water should clear within 24 hours.

Plants are floating to the surface

Ensure the plants are buried deep enough into the Flourite layer. If they continue to float, use aquarium planting tweezers to anchor them deeper into the substrate.

Pros and Cons

Pros

  • Does not alter water pH
  • Does not require replacement
  • Excellent for plant root development
  • Highly porous for beneficial bacteria

Cons

  • Produces significant dust during transport
  • Requires thorough rinsing before use
  • Can cause cloudiness if filled too quickly

Setup, Compatibility & Care

Before adding Flourite to your aquarium, you must rinse it thoroughly. Place the substrate in a bucket and run water through it, stirring gently until the runoff is clear.

To ensure your tank remains clear during the initial fill:

  1. Place the substrate in the tank and arrange your hardscape.
  2. Place a small bowl or a plastic bag directly on top of the substrate.
  3. Pour your water slowly into the bowl, allowing it to overflow gently onto the gravel rather than hitting the substrate directly.

Flourite is compatible with all freshwater fish and invertebrates as it is inert. No specialized maintenance is required; simply vacuum the surface gently during water changes to remove debris.
