Setup, Compatibility & Care
Sowing: Sow seeds indoors 4-6 weeks before the last frost for early crops, or directly outdoors from spring through early summer for autumn and winter harvests. Aim for a soil temperature of 10-20°C (50-68°F).
Planting: Once seedlings are large enough to handle, transplant them into well-drained, fertile soil. Space plants approximately 45-60 cm (18-24 inches) apart in rows that are 60-75 cm (24-30 inches) apart. Ensure good air circulation.
Care: Keep the soil consistently moist, especially during dry spells, to encourage firm head formation. Mulching can help retain moisture and suppress weeds. Feed regularly with a balanced fertilizer, particularly during active growth. Protect young plants from pests like cabbage butterflies and slugs.
Compatibility: Savoy 'Tourmaline' is compatible with most standard vegetable garden setups. Companion planting with herbs like rosemary or thyme can help deter pests. Crop rotation is recommended to prevent soil-borne diseases.
