The Carbeth Plants Camellia japonica is an ideal choice for gardeners looking for an elegant, evergreen statement piece that provides vibrant, red spring blooms. Perfect for both patio containers and garden borders, this shrub offers dense, glossy foliage that remains attractive year-round. While it provides a stunning floral display, it requires specific soil conditions—specifically neutral to acidic environments—meaning gardeners with chalky or alkaline soil will need to amend their planting site with ericaceous compost to ensure the plant thrives.

Camellias require acidic to neutral soil. If you have chalky soil, you must use ericaceous compost to lower the pH.
Yes, this 3L pot size is well-suited for container gardening as long as you use a high-quality ericaceous potting mix.
At maturity, this Camellia typically reaches a height of 2 to 3 metres.
Tap water in hard water areas often contains lime, which can turn the soil alkaline and cause the plant to struggle.
This variety produces its vibrant flowers during the spring season.
No, it prefers semi-shaded locations with dappled light, ideally in a northerly or westerly sheltered position.
This often indicates alkaline soil or iron deficiency. Use an ericaceous fertilizer and switch to rainwater for irrigation.
Ensure the plant is not undergoing extreme water stress. Maintain consistent, moderate soil moisture during the summer months.
For the best results, select a planting site that offers shelter from strong winds. If your soil is naturally alkaline, dig a larger hole and backfill it with ericaceous compost to create an acidic buffer. When watering, prioritize the use of collected rainwater, especially in hard water areas, to avoid mineral buildup that can negatively affect the plant's health. During the first 18 months, keep the soil consistently moist to allow the roots to establish firmly in their new environment.
