Product Information

Full details

The AB Tools AT708 is a heavy-duty tool designed for mechanics and DIY enthusiasts who frequently encounter stubborn battery terminal, windscreen wiper arm, or alternator bearing removals. Its key benefit is the secure, square pull achieved every time, preventing damage to surrounding components. A potential caveat is that its specific jaw opening and outer diameter limitations mean it may not fit all automotive applications.

FAQs

What is the maximum jaw opening of this puller?

The maximum jaw opening for this puller is 28mm.

Can this puller be used on alternator bearings?

Yes, it is suitable for removing some alternator bearings, provided their dimensions fit within the puller's specifications.

Will this tool damage my car's paintwork?

When used correctly and on appropriate components, the puller is designed to remove parts squarely, minimizing the risk of damage to surrounding areas, including paintwork.

How do I ensure the puller works effectively?

Ensure the puller is centered, the jaws are securely locked onto the component, and you turn the central screw steadily and evenly.

What should I do if the wiper arm is extremely difficult to remove?

Apply a penetrating oil to the splined shaft and allow it to sit for some time before attempting removal with the puller. Ensure the puller is correctly positioned.

Are there other sizes available if this one doesn't fit?

AB Tools offers a range of other pullers and slide hammers; please check their product catalog for alternative sizes and types.

Troubleshooting

Puller jaws slipping

Ensure the locking feature is fully engaged and the jaws are positioned as centrally and squarely as possible on the component. Check for obstructions preventing a secure grip.

Component not releasing

Verify the component's dimensions fall within the puller's specified jaw opening (6-28mm) and outer diameter (42mm) limits. Apply penetrating oil to the seized area and allow it to soak before attempting removal again. Ensure the central screw is turning smoothly.

Difficulty turning the central screw

Clean the screw threads and apply a lubricant. Ensure the puller is not over-extended or at an angle that is binding the screw. Check that the component is moving as the screw turns.

Pros and Cons

Pros

  • Effectively removes stubborn and seized components.
  • Prevents damage to wiper arms and surrounding bodywork.
  • Provides a secure and controlled pulling action.
  • Durable construction for long-term use.
  • Suitable for multiple automotive components beyond just wiper arms.

Cons

  • Limited jaw opening (6mm - 28mm) may not fit all applications.
  • Outer diameter limitation (42mm) restricts its use on larger bearings or hubs.
  • Requires sufficient clearance around the component for the puller jaws to grip.
  • May require significant force for extremely seized components, potentially leading to tool strain.

Setup, Compatibility & Care

Setup:

  1. Position the puller's jaws around the base of the component (wiper arm, battery terminal post, or bearing). Ensure the jaws are gripping securely and squarely.
  2. Engage the locking mechanism to hold the jaws in place.
  3. Turn the central screw clockwise to apply pressure and slowly pull the component free.

Compatibility:

  • Suitable for components with a jaw opening requirement between 6mm and 28mm.
  • Best suited for components with an outer diameter of up to 42mm.
  • Ensure adequate clearance around the component for the puller's arms.

Care:

  • After use, clean the puller with a dry cloth to remove debris.
  • Apply a light coat of oil to the screw threads and moving parts to prevent rust and ensure smooth operation.
  • Store in a dry place.
