FAQs

What size filters does this matte box support?

The Kondor Blue KB-MB-DSK Matte Box System supports standard 4x5.65” filters with thicknesses ranging from 2mm to 4mm.

How many filters can I use at once?

This dual-stage kit allows for the use of up to four 4x5.65" filters simultaneously when configured with additional filter trays.

Does this matte box come with lens adapters?

Yes, the kit includes a 95mm clamp-on lens adapter. Other sizes and types of adapters (threaded, compression) are available for purchase separately.

Is this matte box compatible with non-Kondor Blue systems?

The system uses the ARRI-style 8mm 4-post mounting standard and is compatible with the ARRI LMB system, as well as other KONDOR Blue accessories.

What is the advantage of the magnetic filter catches?

The magnetic filter catches make filter insertion and removal quicker and more secure. The magnetic filter tags allow for easy labeling and identification of filters.

What materials is the matte box constructed from?

The matte box is primarily constructed from durable aluminum, with a premium carbon fiber top flag.

Are the adjustment knobs captive?

Yes, all adjustment knobs on the KB-MB-DSK are designed to be captive, meaning they cannot be fully removed from the device, preventing loss.

Troubleshooting

Matte box feels loose on camera support rods.

Ensure the 8mm posts of the matte box are properly seated on the camera support rods. Tighten the captive adjustment knobs firmly but do not overtighten. Verify that the rods themselves are securely mounted to your camera rig.

Filters are difficult to insert or remove.

Check the filter tray for any debris or damage. Ensure the filter is correctly seated within the tray and that the tray is aligned properly with the matte box slot. Clean the edges of the filter and the interior of the tray with a microfiber cloth.

Lens adapter does not fit securely on the lens.

Confirm you are using the correct size clamp-on adapter for your lens diameter. Ensure the adapter's clamping mechanism is fully opened before attempting to attach it, and then tighten securely. If using a threaded adapter, ensure the lens threads are clean and undamaged.

Top flag is not staying in desired position.

Adjust the top flag tension control knob. If the flag is still loose, inspect the tilting mechanism for any obstructions or signs of wear.

Setup, Compatibility & Care

Setup:

The KB-MB-DSK utilizes an ARRI-style 8mm 4-post system for mounting onto camera support rods. To attach, slide the matte box onto the rods and secure using the captive adjustment knobs. The system includes a 95mm clamp-on lens adapter, which attaches directly to the front of the matte box and then clamps onto the front of your lens. Additional clamp-on adapters in various sizes and threaded lens adapters are available separately to accommodate different lens diameters.

Filter insertion is straightforward: slide the filter tray into one of the available filter stages. The pivoting magnetic filter catches securely hold the tray in place, and magnetic filter tags can be applied to the trays for easy filter identification.

Compatibility:

This matte box is designed to be highly compatible with the ARRI LMB system. It integrates seamlessly with other components within the KONDOR Blue 4x5 Matte Box System. It supports 4x5.65” filters with thicknesses ranging from 2mm to 4mm.

Care:

To maintain the performance and longevity of your matte box:

  1. Cleaning: Gently wipe the aluminum and carbon fiber components with a soft, dry microfiber cloth. For stubborn smudges, use a slightly damp cloth and allow to air dry completely before reassembling or storing.
  2. Storage: Store the matte box in a protective case or its original packaging when not in use. The magnetically nesting top flag allows for compact storage.
  3. Hardware: Periodically check that all adjustment knobs are secure, but avoid over-tightening. Ensure filter trays are clean to prevent binding.
