FAQs

Are these springs compatible with all garage doors?

No. These are specifically 0.225 x 2 x 27 inch springs. You must match the wire diameter, inner diameter, and length to your existing door specifications to ensure safety and function.

Do I need special tools to install these?

The set includes anti-slip winding bars and a mounting wrench, which are the primary tools required for installation. You will also need standard hand tools like a socket set for the stationary cone bolts.

Can I replace just one spring if only one is broken?

It is highly recommended to replace both springs simultaneously. Springs wear out at similar rates, and replacing only one can lead to an uneven, dangerous balance.

Is the finish on these springs safe for outdoor-facing garages?

Yes, the electrocoated finish is specifically designed to resist corrosion and wear, making them durable even in garages that may be exposed to humidity or temperature fluctuations.

What should I do if I am not confident in installing these myself?

Garage door torsion springs are under extreme tension. If you are not experienced with mechanical repairs, please consult a professional garage door technician to avoid injury.

Troubleshooting

The garage door feels heavy or won't stay open

The springs may require more tension. Ensure the spring is wound to the correct number of turns specified by your garage door manufacturer.

Spring makes squeaking or grinding noises

While these springs are low-maintenance, ensure that no debris is trapped between the coils and verify that the torsion shaft is properly aligned.

Pros and Cons

Pros

  • High cycle rating of 16,000+ provides long-term value
  • Electrocoated finish prevents rust and reduces maintenance
  • Comprehensive kit includes essential tools like winding bars and gloves
  • High-carbon steel offers superior structural integrity

Cons

  • Installation requires technical knowledge of garage door systems
  • Torsion springs are under high tension and can be dangerous if handled incorrectly
  • Specific measurements must match your current spring specifications exactly for safety

Setup, Compatibility & Care

Before installation, ensure that the measurements (0.225" wire diameter, 2" inner diameter, 27" length) match your existing setup, as torsion springs are not universal.

  1. Preparation: Fully close the garage door and disconnect the power to the door opener. Use the included gloves to protect your hands.
  2. Removal: Carefully unwind the existing springs using the provided winding bars before removing the old hardware.
  3. Installation: Slide the new springs onto the torsion shaft, ensuring the left and right springs are placed on their correct respective sides.
  4. Tensioning: Use the anti-slip winding bars to carefully tighten the springs to the manufacturer's specified tension settings.

Always inspect the springs periodically for signs of deformation or damage. While the electrocoated finish resists rust, keeping the shaft clean and ensuring the door tracks are clear of debris will prolong the life of the entire lifting system.
