FAQs

What is the main advantage of the conical grip design?

The conical shape increases damping towards the outer end of the grip, providing better shock absorption and comfort on rough terrain while maintaining a responsive feel closer to the clamp.

How do I choose between Standard and Slim grip diameters?

Standard is recommended for larger hands (glove sizes L/XL, 8.5-10.5) or riders preferring more cushioning. Slim is recommended for smaller hands (glove sizes S/M, 6.5-8.5) or those who prefer a thinner grip profile.

Are these grips suitable for carbon handlebars?

Yes, the internal CNC aluminum clamps are designed to be safe for carbon handlebars and prevent twisting.

How do I clean the Ergon GD1 Evo Factory Grips?

Clean with mild soap and water using a damp cloth. Avoid using harsh chemicals or abrasive cleaners.

What does 'Factory Custom Rubber' mean?

This refers to Ergon's exclusive, German-made rubber compound known for its high grip properties, durability, and specific damping characteristics, developed for demanding cycling applications.

What is the weight of the GD1 Evo Factory grips?

The Standard size weighs approximately 140g per pair, and the Slim size weighs approximately 125g per pair.

Can the end plugs be replaced?

Yes, the end plugs are interchangeable and replaceable, adding to the longevity of the grips.

Troubleshooting

Grips twist on the handlebar

Ensure the internal CNC clamp screws are tightened sufficiently and evenly. Check for any debris on the handlebar or inside the grip clamp.

Grips feel too large or too small

The GD1 Evo Factory comes in two diameters (Standard and Slim). Consult the sizing guide and consider trying the alternative size if the initial fit is not optimal.

Reduced grip or sticky feel

Clean the grips thoroughly with mild soap and water. Ensure no oils or lubricants have contaminated the surface.

End plugs are damaged

The end plugs are designed to be replaceable. Contact Ergon or your dealer for replacement parts.

Pros and Cons

Pros

  • Exceptional damping properties for rough terrain
  • Soft yet precise grip feeling due to the Factory rubber compound
  • Reduces required gripping force, leading to less hand fatigue
  • Secure and twist-proof mounting with CNC aluminum clamps
  • Available in two sizes to suit different hand dimensions
  • Durable construction with replaceable end plugs

Cons

  • Grip diameter selection is crucial for optimal fit and performance
  • The unique rubber compound might wear faster than harder compounds under extreme conditions
  • Higher price point compared to basic grip models

Setup, Compatibility & Care

Setup:

  1. Ensure handlebars are clean.
  2. Slide the grip onto the handlebar, aligning it with the desired position.
  3. Tighten the internal CNC aluminum clamp screws evenly until the grip is secure and does not twist. Do not overtighten, especially on carbon handlebars.

Compatibility:

  • Compatible with standard 31.8mm and 35mm handlebars.
  • Suitable for both aluminum and carbon handlebars due to the internal clamp design.
  • Available in two diameters: Standard (for glove sizes L/XL, 8.5-10.5) and Slim (for glove sizes S/M, 6.5-8.5).

Care:

  • Clean grips regularly with mild soap and water. A damp cloth is usually sufficient.
  • Avoid using harsh solvents or abrasive cleaners, as they can damage the rubber compound.
  • Periodically check the clamp screws for tightness.
  • Replace end plugs if they become damaged to protect the handlebars.
