Product Information

Full details

The PBSL Group 80mm Perforated Land Drain and Filter Sleeve Kit is designed for homeowners, landscapers, and contractors seeking a reliable solution for managing excess groundwater in gardens and construction sites. Its primary benefit is the pre-applied geotextile filter sleeve, which prevents silt and debris from clogging the drainage pipe, ensuring long-term efficiency without the need for expensive aggregate filters. While highly effective, it is important to note that the pipe requires careful backfilling to ensure the structure remains supported and does not crush under heavy surface loads.

FAQs

Can this pipe be used under a driveway?

This pipe is primarily intended for garden and lawn drainage; it is not rated for heavy vehicular traffic. Use rigid, load-bearing pipe if installing under driveways.

Do I need to wrap the pipe in additional stone?

The integrated geotextile sleeve is designed to act as a filter, potentially eliminating the need for expensive aggregate, though a layer of grit at the base is still recommended.

How do I join two lengths of pipe?

You can use standard 80mm drainage couplings available at most hardware stores to join sections securely.

Does the sleeve come pre-installed?

Yes, the kit includes the perforated pipe with the protective filter sleeve already fitted.

What is the maximum burial depth?

It is recommended to keep burial depths shallow (typically under 600mm) for this type of flexible pipe to prevent structural collapse.

Troubleshooting

Water is not draining effectively

Check the slope/gradient of your trench to ensure it has a proper fall toward the outlet, or verify that the terminal end is not blocked.

Pipe appears compressed or squashed

Ensure the pipe is not buried too deep under heavy load and verify that the backfill material does not contain large, sharp stones.

Pros and Cons

Pros

  • Reduces the cost and labor of importing expensive aggregate filters
  • Geotextile sleeve effectively prevents clogging from fine silt and soil
  • Lightweight design allows for easy handling and installation by one person
  • Efficiently manages water table levels to prevent surface saturation
  • Durable construction ensures longevity in standard soil conditions

Cons

  • Not suitable for use under heavy vehicular traffic or deep burial depths without structural protection
  • Requires proper trench preparation to function as intended
  • Does not replace a complete engineered drainage system in complex soil types

Setup, Compatibility & Care

To ensure maximum performance, follow these guidelines:

  1. Trench Preparation: Excavate trenches with a consistent gradient (typically 1:100 fall) to encourage water flow toward the outlet.
  2. Installation: Unroll the pipe carefully into the trench. Ensure the sleeve remains intact; if torn, patch it with permeable tape to avoid silt ingress.
  3. Backfilling: Use clean, granular material around the pipe to provide support, followed by native soil. Avoid using large, jagged rocks that could pierce the sleeve.
  4. Maintenance: Regularly check the outlet point of the drainage system to ensure it is not obstructed by debris, mud, or vegetation, which can cause water to back up into the pipe.
