FAQs
Does this enclosure support SATA M.2 drives?
No, the ProArt PA40SU is designed exclusively for NVMe M.2 SSDs.
Can I use this with a standard USB 3.0 port?
Yes, it is backward compatible, but your data transfer speeds will be limited by the older USB standard.
Is the cooling fan always running?
The fan uses intelligent 4-phase control and will adjust speed based on the temperature of the SSD to ensure it only runs when necessary.
Do I need special drivers to use this?
No, it is plug-and-play for most modern operating systems, though the ProArt Dashboard software is recommended for advanced monitoring.
What is the maximum SSD capacity supported?
The enclosure supports standard high-capacity M.2 NVMe modules; check the current drive market for compatibility with specific sizes (up to 8TB is generally supported).
Troubleshooting
Drive not detected by the operating system
Ensure the drive is properly seated in the M.2 slot and that the USB cable is securely connected to a high-speed port.
Performance is lower than expected
Verify you are using the provided high-speed USB-C cable and connecting to a USB 4.0 or Thunderbolt 4 port on your computer.
Fan is making a clicking sound
Check for debris or dust trapped in the cooling fan intake; use compressed air to clear the obstruction.
Pros and Cons
Pros
- Ultra-fast 40Gbps data transfer speeds
- Sophisticated active cooling system prevents thermal throttling
- Completely tool-free drive installation
- Quiet operational noise levels
- Seamless integration with ProArt monitoring software
Cons
- Higher price point compared to basic USB enclosures
- Requires a USB 4.0 or Thunderbolt port to achieve maximum rated speeds
- Slightly larger than passive heatsink-only enclosures due to the fan
Setup, Compatibility & Care
- Installation: To install your M.2 NVMe SSD, slide open the enclosure housing using the tool-free latch. Insert your M.2 drive into the slot, secure it with the provided retention mechanism, and slide the cover back on.
- Compatibility: The enclosure is backward compatible with USB 3.2 and USB 3.1 ports, though you will see lower transfer speeds if not used with a USB 4.0-capable host port. It is optimized for use with NVMe M.2 SSDs.
- Drive Monitoring: Download and install the ProArt SSD Dashboard from the official ASUS support page to keep track of your drive's remaining lifespan, temperature, and firmware version.
- Care: Keep the cooling intake vents free of dust. If the fan begins to sound abnormal, use a compressed air canister to gently clean the intake area.
