After about three years, red-skinned and 5 mm pepper fruits emerge from the inconspicuous flowers when fully ripe. Green pepper is produced from the unripe fruits, black pepper from the fully ripe and dried fruits, and white pepper is obtained by removing the outer skin. The appetizing and digestion-promoting pungency of the pepper plant comes from the alkaloid piperine, which activates the heat and pain receptors and causes salivation and the release of digestive enzymes. The pepper plant can easily be cultivated indoors all year round. Natural location: The pepper plant originally comes from the coastal area of the Indian subcontinent, especially from the Malabar coast in southwestern India. With the spread of Indian culture, it became native to Indonesia and Malaysia. The largest growing areas are now in Vietnam, Indonesia, India, Brazil and Malaysia. Cultivation: Seed propagation indoors is possible all year round. To increase the germination capacity, you should first put the seeds in a bowl of lukewarm water for about 12 hours to prepare. Gently press the seeds into moist potting soil mixed with a quarter of sand, put a layer of compost soil on top and cover the seed container with a clear foil to prevent the soil from drying out. Don't forget to drill some holes in the clear foil and remove it completely every two or three days for about 2 hours. This way you avoid the formation of mold on your potting soil. Place the seed container in a bright and very warm place with a temperature between 25° C and 30° Celsius and keep the soil moist but not wet. Depending on the propagation temperature, the first seedlings emerge after two to six weeks. Location: The pepper plant prefers a warm and bright location, but does not want to be constantly in direct sunlight. Since it likes a humid climate, you should spray the plant regularly with low-lime water. Care: Start with cultivation in a smaller pot with a diameter of about 12 cm and gradually move the plant upwards every three years. Give your pepper plant a climbing aid from the start. Due to its thick and fleshy leaves, the water requirement of the plant is rather limited. However, you should water it regularly and avoid waterlogging due to too much water in the saucer. From April to September, you can also fertilize container plants every two weeks. In winter: Even in winter, the Piper nigrum would like to be in a bright and warm place with a temperature of at least 15° Celsius. Continue to water moderately and without waterlogging. Deciduous leaves are replaced by new buds in spring.
