Setup, Compatibility & Care
Planting: Choose a location that receives full sun for the best flowering. Ensure the soil is consistently moist or that the plant can be situated in shallow water. The ideal planting depth for a 9cm potted plant is such that the top of the root ball is level with the soil or water surface.
Watering: This plant requires a steady supply of moisture. Avoid allowing the soil to dry out at any point. For bog gardens or pond edges, this is naturally achieved. For borders, regular watering is essential, especially during dry periods.
Feeding: Apply a balanced liquid fertiliser in spring. This will support healthy growth and abundant flowering throughout the season.
Temperature: Schizostylis coccinea ‘Major’ is hardy and can withstand typical UK winter temperatures when planted in suitable conditions.
Compatibility: Excellent for pond margins, bog gardens, damp borders, and mixed perennial plantings where consistent moisture is present. Not suitable for dry, well-drained beds.
Care: Minimal care is required beyond ensuring adequate moisture and occasional feeding. Deadheading spent flower stalks is not strictly necessary but can improve the plant's appearance.
