Product Information

Full details

This Sealey heat shrink terminal is designed for automotive and electrical professionals needing a quick and reliable wire connection. Its key benefit is the adhesive-lined tubing that ensures a secure, insulated, and water-resistant seal when heat is applied. A potential caveat is that it's specifically for 22-18 AWG cable sizes, so verification of wire gauge is essential before use.

FAQs

What is the primary advantage of using heat shrink terminals?

Heat shrink terminals provide a sealed, insulated, and vibration-resistant connection, which protects against moisture and corrosion, leading to more reliable electrical systems.

What wire gauge range does this specific terminal fit?

This Sealey heat shrink terminal is designed for cable sizes ranging from 22 to 18 AWG.

What is the purpose of the adhesive lining?

The adhesive lining melts when heat is applied, flowing to create a waterproof and secure seal around the wire, preventing contaminants from entering the connection.

What kind of tool do I need to apply this terminal?

You will need a heat source, such as a heat gun or a low-setting butane torch, to shrink the tubing around the wire.

How do I ensure a good seal?

Ensure the wire is fully inserted, then apply heat evenly around the tubing, starting from the center and moving outwards. Continue heating until the tubing has conformed to the wire and the adhesive has melted and flowed.

Can I use this for high-temperature applications?

These terminals are generally suitable for standard automotive and electrical applications. For extreme high-temperature environments, specialized terminals may be required.

What does the red color indicate?

The transparent red color is a standard industry indicator for heat shrink terminals designed for the 22-18 AWG wire gauge range.

Troubleshooting

Terminal does not shrink properly

Ensure sufficient heat is applied evenly. Check that the heat source is at the correct temperature and distance. Verify the terminal is not damaged.

Adhesive is not sealing

Apply heat for a slightly longer duration, ensuring it is concentrated around the edges where the adhesive needs to flow. Make sure the wire is inserted fully and no insulation is preventing a complete seal.

Wire gauge does not fit

This terminal is specifically for 22-18 AWG wire. For different wire sizes, a terminal with a different gauge specification is required.

Color coding is unclear

Refer to standard wire gauge color-coding charts. Red typically signifies the 22-18 AWG range for heat shrink terminals.

Pros and Cons

Pros

  • Provides a robust, insulated, and sealed connection.
  • Adhesive lining offers superior protection against moisture and vibration.
  • Quick and easy to apply with standard heat tools.
  • Clear color-coding aids in correct wire gauge selection.
  • Suitable for a common range of wire gauges (22-18 AWG).

Cons

  • Limited to specific wire gauges (22-18 AWG).
  • Requires a heat source for proper application.
  • Not designed for applications requiring extremely high temperatures or industrial-grade sealing.
  • Transparent red color may not be aesthetically preferred in all visible applications.

Setup, Compatibility & Care

Setup:

  1. Select the appropriate Sealey Heat Shrink Terminal for your wire gauge. This model is designed for 22-18 AWG wire.
  2. Strip the end of the wire you intend to connect.
  3. Insert the stripped wire end fully into the terminal's metal barrel.
  4. Using a heat gun or other suitable heat source, apply heat evenly around the tubing. Start from the center and move outwards.
  5. Continue applying heat until the tubing has shrunk tightly around the wire and the adhesive inside has melted and flowed, creating a seal.

Compatibility:

  • Compatible with solid or stranded copper wire within the 22-18 AWG range.
  • Requires a heat source capable of shrinking polyolefin tubing (e.g., heat gun, butane torch on low setting).

Care:

  • Store terminals in a dry environment to prevent premature activation of the adhesive.
  • Clean tools used for application after each use to maintain optimal performance.
