Setup, Compatibility & Care
Planting: Choose a location that receives full sun or partial shade. Ensure the soil is moist but well-drained. Dig a hole twice the width of the root ball and to the same depth. Gently place the shrub in the hole and backfill with soil, firming gently around the base.
Watering: Water thoroughly during the first growing season to help the plant establish. Once established, 'Red Robin' is drought-tolerant, but water during prolonged dry spells.
Feeding: Apply a balanced fertilizer in spring and again in mid-summer to promote healthy growth and vibrant colour.
Pruning: For best colour, prune in late spring or early summer after the main flush of growth. This encourages the development of new red shoots. Remove any dead or damaged branches at any time of year.
Soil: Prefers moist, well-drained soil. It can tolerate a range of soil types but avoid waterlogged conditions.
Hardiness: Hardy to H4 (temperatures between -10°C and -5°C). Young plants may benefit from some winter protection in extremely cold areas.
