Full details

The Neutrik NCJ5FIS is a versatile panel-mount combo socket designed for audio professionals and DIY enthusiasts looking to integrate XLR and 6.35mm (1/4") mono jack connections into custom audio setups. Its primary benefit is offering two common audio connectors in a single, space-saving unit, ideal for building patch bays, effects pedals, or replacing damaged chassis sockets. The Neutrik NCJ5FIS supports mono audio signals for both XLR and 6.35mm (1/4") connections. It is not designed for stereo signals or speaker-level outputs.

Do I need to solder this connector?

Yes, this is a solder-type connector. You will need to solder wires to the terminals for installation.

What is the chassis cut-out size required?

The recommended chassis cut-out size is 23.8 mm (0.94 inches).

Can I use this for balanced audio?

Yes, the XLR connection is suitable for balanced mono audio signals. The 6.35mm jack supports standard mono signals.

What material are the contacts made of?

The contacts are gold-plated, offering excellent conductivity and resistance to corrosion.

Can this connector be used for both input and output?

Yes, it can be used for both input and output connections, depending on how you wire it into your audio system.

Is this connector weather-proof?

This connector is designed for indoor audio equipment and is not rated as weather-proof. Avoid exposure to moisture and harsh environmental conditions.

Troubleshooting

No audio signal from XLR connection

Check that the male XLR cable is securely connected. Verify that the solder connections for the XLR pins on the NCJ5FIS are intact and correctly wired. Test the male XLR cable with another device.

Intermittent audio signal from 6.35mm jack

Ensure the 6.35mm plug is fully inserted. Inspect the solder connections for the jack contacts on the NCJ5FIS for any breaks or cold solder joints. Clean the jack contacts on both the plug and socket.

Connector is loose in the panel mount

Verify that the chassis cut-out is the correct size (23.8mm). Ensure the mounting screws are tightened securely against the panel. Check that the panel material is rigid enough to support the connector.

Both XLR and 6.35mm jack connections are failing

This may indicate a more significant issue with the panel wiring or power supply if applicable. Double-check all associated wiring and solder points for continuity.

Pros and Cons

Pros

  • Combines two essential audio connectors (XLR and 6.35mm jack) into one unit.
  • Space-saving design ideal for custom panels and equipment.
  • Durable construction with gold-plated contacts for reliable signal integrity.
  • Easy to mount on standard panels.
  • Suitable for a wide range of audio applications from microphones to instruments.

Cons

  • Requires soldering for installation, which may not be suitable for beginners.
  • Priced and sold individually, so multiple units may be needed for complex setups.
  • Chassis cut-out size is specific and requires precise panel preparation.

Setup, Compatibility & Care

Setup:

  1. Prepare Panel: Cut a chassis opening of 23.8mm (0.94 inches) in your desired panel. Ensure the panel thickness is suitable for the connector's mounting mechanism.
  2. Solder Connections: Identify the corresponding pins for the XLR and 6.35mm jack connections. Solder your wires to the designated solder terminals, ensuring clean and secure connections. Refer to standard XLR and 1/4" jack wiring diagrams if needed.
  3. Mount Connector: Insert the Neutrik NCJ5FIS into the prepared chassis cut-out. Secure it using the mounting screws and the fixing centres (20 x 23 mm).

Compatibility:

  • XLR: Compatible with standard 3-pin male XLR connectors.
  • 6.35mm Jack: Compatible with standard 6.35mm (1/4 inch) mono male jack plugs.
  • Panel Thickness: Suitable for panels where the mounting mechanism can be securely fastened.

Care:

  • Keep the connector contacts clean and free from dust and debris. Use a dry, lint-free cloth for general cleaning.
  • Avoid exposing the connector to excessive moisture or corrosive substances.
  • Periodically check solder joints for integrity, especially if the unit is subjected to frequent vibration or movement.
