Full details

The Dionaea muscipula's trapping mechanism is one of the fastest movements in plants. The red color of the lamina attracts prey. The edge of the leaf blade has side bristles, while the middle of the two leaf halves usually has three hair-thin sensitive bristles. As soon as an insect repeatedly touches one of the sensitive bristles or different bristles in a row, the trap snaps shut at an enormous speed. Small glands now begin to produce a digestive enzyme that breaks down the prey and helps to absorb the nutrients. Only indigestible parts such as the chitin exoskeleton remain. Digestion takes up to ten days depending on the size of the prey. After that, the trap opens again for the next catch. The Venus flytrap has its only natural habitat in the US states of North and South Carolina, where it grows exclusively in swamps, mainly in an area of about 100 km around the city of Wilmington. The collection of its seeds is only permitted to persons with a license. Since 1992, the plant has been strictly protected by the Washington Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora. Seed propagation indoors is possible throughout the year. To increase germination, you should store the seeds sealed in a plastic bag in the freezer of your refrigerator for about two days. As light germs, the seeds of the Venus flytrap can simply be scattered on damp seed compost without putting compost soil over it. Cover the seed container with clear film so that the earth does not dry out, but do not forget to make a few holes in the clear film and remove it completely every second or third day for about 2 hours. This prevents the formation of mold on your potting soil. Place the seed container in a bright and warm place with a temperature between 25°C and 30° Celsius (for example near a heater) and keep the soil moist but not wet. It usually takes about four to six weeks for germination. A bright and full sunny location is ideal for your Dionaea muscipula. The Venus flytrap needs either raised moor peat or commercially available carnivorous plant soil for cultivation. As it is a swamp plant, constant watering is required. It is best to keep the plant on a saucer that should always be filled with low-lime water. Contrary to popular opinion, insects are not the food of the Venus flytrap, but fertilizer for the plant that can be stored for up to a year. Therefore, fertilization is not necessary and is rather destructive for cultivation. Keep the plant in a bright and cool place with a temperature between 4° and 12° Celsius. During hibernation, all traps can die, but they will sprout again in spring. Continue to water the plant, but in moderate amounts.
