FAQs
When is the best time to plant the 'Climbing Arthur Bell' rose?
Roses are typically best planted in spring or autumn when the soil is workable and temperatures are moderate. This allows the roots to establish before extreme weather.
How tall does this climbing rose grow?
While specific heights can vary based on conditions and training, climbing roses can typically reach several feet in height. Provide adequate support for its growth.
Can I grow this rose indoors?
This rose is an outdoor plant and requires sunlight and specific garden conditions. It is not suitable for growing indoors.
What does the RHS Award of Garden Merit mean?
This award indicates that the plant has been judged by experts to be outstanding for garden use, demonstrating excellent performance and reliability.
How often should I water my potted climbing rose?
Potted plants dry out faster than those in the ground. Check the soil moisture regularly and water thoroughly when the top inch of soil feels dry. This may be daily in hot weather.
When should I fertilize my rose?
Feed your rose with a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth appears, and again in mid-summer after the first main flush of blooms.
Troubleshooting
Rose not flowering
Ensure adequate sunlight (at least 6 hours daily), proper feeding, and appropriate pruning. Check for pests or diseases that may be hindering growth.
Yellowing leaves
This can be due to overwatering, underwatering, or nutrient deficiency. Adjust watering schedule and consider a balanced rose fertilizer.
Lack of strong growth
Verify soil conditions are good, the plant is receiving enough sun, and it is adequately watered. Ensure it has a suitable support structure.
Pest infestation (e.g., aphids)
Manually remove small infestations or use a garden hose to spray them off. Insecticidal soap or neem oil can be used for persistent problems.
Fungal diseases (e.g., black spot, mildew)
Improve air circulation by pruning. Remove affected leaves promptly. Fungicides can be used as a preventative or treatment measure.

Setup, Compatibility & Care
**Planting:
- Location: Choose a sunny spot with well-drained soil. Roses generally need at least 6 hours of sunlight per day.
- Soil Preparation: Improve the soil with compost or well-rotted manure. If planting in a container, use a good quality potting mix suitable for roses.
- Planting Depth: Plant the rose so the graft union (the swollen part where the rose was joined to the rootstock) is just at or slightly below soil level.
- Watering: Water thoroughly after planting. Keep the soil consistently moist, especially during the first few weeks and dry spells.
Support and Training:
- Install a support structure (trellis, wires, obelisk) at the time of planting or shortly after.
- Gently tie the main stems to the support as they grow, encouraging them to spread horizontally for better flowering.
Care:
- Pruning: Prune in late winter or early spring. Remove dead, damaged, or crossing branches. Shorten back the main stems by about one-third to one-half.
- Feeding: Feed with a balanced fertilizer in spring and again in mid-summer.
- Pest and Disease: Monitor for common rose pests (aphids, black spot, mildew) and treat as necessary. Good air circulation helps prevent fungal diseases.
