Product Information

Full details

This 5-meter USB 3.0 SuperSpeed Active Repeater Extension Cable is designed for users needing to extend the reach of their USB peripherals without sacrificing speed. It enables reliable 5Gbps data transfer speeds over a significant distance, ideal for connecting devices like external hard drives, webcams, or printers further away from your computer. A potential caveat is that active cables, while extending reach, can sometimes introduce compatibility nuances with very specific or sensitive USB devices compared to shorter, passive cables.

FAQs

What is the maximum data transfer speed supported by this cable?

This cable supports USB 3.0 SuperSpeed, which offers a theoretical maximum data transfer speed of 5Gbps.

Can I use this cable with USB 2.0 devices or ports?

Yes, the cable is backward compatible. However, when used with USB 2.0 ports or devices, the data transfer speed will be limited to USB 2.0 speeds (up to 480Mbps).

Does the active chipset require external power?

No, the active chipset is powered directly through the USB connection from the host computer.

Will this cable work for charging my phone?

While it can provide power, its primary function is data transfer. For fast charging, dedicated charging cables or hubs are usually recommended, as charging speeds can vary and may be limited over this extension.

Can I connect multiple of these cables together for a longer reach?

Connecting multiple active repeaters is generally not recommended and may lead to instability or data errors. It's best to use a single 5-meter cable for its intended purpose.

What is the difference between an active and a passive USB extension cable?

A passive cable simply extends the wires. An active cable, like this one, contains a chipset that regenerates the USB signal, allowing for longer cable runs without significant data loss or degradation. This ensures SuperSpeed performance over 5 meters.

Troubleshooting

Device not detected

Ensure both ends of the cable are securely connected. Verify that you are using a USB 3.0 port on the host computer for optimal performance. Try connecting the USB device directly to the computer to rule out a device issue. If using a USB hub, ensure the hub is powered and connected via USB 3.0.

Slow data transfer speeds

Confirm that both the computer's port and the connected USB device support USB 3.0 (SuperSpeed). If either end is connected to a USB 2.0 port, speeds will be limited. Check that the cable is not damaged and that the active chipset is functioning correctly.

Intermittent connection or dropped devices

Securely re-seat both ends of the cable. Ensure the connected USB device has sufficient power. Some power-hungry devices may require a powered USB 3.0 hub in conjunction with the extension cable. Avoid routing the cable near sources of strong electromagnetic interference.

Pros and Cons

Pros

  • Enables USB connectivity over a 5-meter distance.
  • Maintains high USB 3.0 SuperSpeed data transfer rates.
  • Active chipset ensures signal integrity over the extended length.
  • Ideal for positioning peripherals like cameras or printers further away.
  • Backward compatible with older USB standards.

Cons

  • May not be suitable for all ultra-sensitive USB devices due to the active circuitry.
  • Requires a USB 3.0 port on the host device to achieve maximum speeds.
  • Slightly bulkier than passive cables due to the active chipset.
  • Limited to 5 meters; longer extensions may require different solutions.

Setup, Compatibility & Care

Setup:

  1. Connect the Type-A end of the repeater cable to a USB 3.0 port on your computer or USB hub.
  2. Connect your USB device (e.g., external drive, camera) to the Type-A receptacle on the other end of the repeater cable.
  3. Your operating system should automatically detect the device. Ensure you are using USB 3.0 ports on both ends for optimal performance.

Compatibility:

  • Host Device: Requires a USB 3.0 port for SuperSpeed operation. Works with USB 2.0/1.1 ports at reduced speeds.
  • Devices: Compatible with most USB 3.0 peripherals, including external hard drives, SSDs, webcams, printers, and flash drives.
  • Operating Systems: Supports Windows, macOS, and Linux.

Care:

  • Avoid bending the cable sharply, especially near the connectors or the active chipset housing.
  • Keep connectors clean and free of dust. Use compressed air if necessary.
  • Do not expose the cable to extreme temperatures or moisture.
  • Store the cable loosely coiled when not in use.
