Product Information

Full details

Osmo UV Protection Oil Tints are designed for wood surfaces needing enhanced protection against UV-induced greying, particularly exterior applications. The key benefit is significantly delaying the natural greying process of wood. A caveat is that while it slows greying, wood color will still fade over time, and it does not prevent color fading entirely. This professional-grade hardwax-oil finish offers excellent water and dirt resistance, is environmentally friendly when dry, and is safe for humans, plants, and animals.

FAQs

What is the main purpose of Osmo UV Protection Oil Tints?

The primary purpose is to significantly delay the natural greying of exterior wood caused by UV radiation, while also providing water and dirt resistance.

Can I use this on interior wood?

While it's safe for humans, plants, and animals when dry, it's primarily designed for exterior use. For interior wood, consider other Osmo finishes like Polyx-Oil, which offers different properties.

Do I need to sand before re-coating?

No, generally sanding is not necessary when topping up the coating, provided the surface is clean and dry. This simplifies maintenance.

How often should I re-apply the oil?

The frequency depends on the exposure and wear. For exterior applications, a maintenance coat may be needed annually or when the water repellency diminishes.

What does 'delays greying by 12 times' mean?

It means that the wood treated with this product will take approximately 12 times longer to achieve the same level of grey appearance compared to untreated wood under similar environmental conditions.

Is this product suitable for decking?

Yes, it is suitable for exterior woods including decking. However, for decking that experiences very heavy foot traffic, ensure adequate maintenance and consider its specific wear characteristics.

Can I mix different tints together?

Osmo generally advises against mixing different tints unless specifically stated or recommended by the manufacturer, as it may affect the performance and appearance of the finish. Always test in an inconspicuous area first.

What is the difference between UV Protection Oil and UV Protection Oil Tints?

UV Protection Oil (clear) provides UV protection but no color. UV Protection Oil Tints offer UV protection along with a transparent color to help maintain the wood's original hue for longer, slowing down fading and greying.

Troubleshooting

Uneven finish or color blotching

Ensure the product was applied thinly and evenly. Avoid over-application or working in direct sunlight. Brush out any excess product thoroughly. If the issue persists, a light sanding and re-application may be necessary.

Product not drying properly

Ensure adequate ventilation and appropriate temperature (ideally above 10°C / 50°F). Avoid applying too thickly. Check that the wood surface was completely dry before application. Thick application or poor ventilation can significantly slow drying times.

Water beading is not effective after application

This can indicate the finish has not fully cured or has been compromised. Ensure the recommended drying times were met. Re-application of a thin, even coat may be required.

Wood still appears to be greying

While the product significantly slows greying, prolonged extreme UV exposure can still cause some color change over a very long period. Ensure the product was applied correctly and according to instructions. Regular maintenance coats are essential.

  • Requires re-application for continued protection.
  • Application requires specific techniques for best results.
  • May not be suitable for all wood types or interior applications without testing.
  • Initial cost might be higher than standard wood treatments.

Setup, Compatibility & Care

Application: Ensure the wood surface is clean, dry, and free from dust, grease, or old finishes. For unfinished wood, apply thinly with a brush or roller. For oiled or waxed surfaces, ensure they are completely removed. For existing finishes, test compatibility first. Apply one thin coat of UV Protection Oil Tints. Allow to dry for at least 8-10 hours in good ventilation. Apply a second thin coat. If using a colored tint for the first coat, follow with a clear coat of UV Protection Oil (clear) for maximum UV protection. For re-coating, one thin coat is usually sufficient, applied to a clean and dry surface. No sanding is necessary if re-coating within a reasonable timeframe.

Compatibility: Suitable for all smooth and rough sawn exterior woods such as Larch, Douglas Fir, Cedar, Oak, and Pine. It is also suitable for furniture, cladding, fences, decking, pergolas, and more. Not recommended for use as a sole finish on floors that receive heavy foot traffic without prior testing.

Care: Clean spills immediately by wiping with a cloth. For general cleaning, use a damp cloth and mild detergent. Avoid harsh chemical cleaners. To maintain the finish, re-apply a thin coat of the UV Protection Oil Tints as needed, typically annually or when signs of wear appear.
